We Are Igbos, Not Blacks
When someone says “You’re Black,” they may be pointing to a shared experience; but when the label ends any further effort to learn who we are, it becomes an erasure.
For Igbos, identity is anchored in a specific history: our dialects, names that tell stories, proverbs passed between grandparents and grandchildren, market customs, festivals, clothing patterns and ways of relating to one another. These things are not captured by a single colour.
Black is colour. Igbo is identity. That sentence is a starting place for a thoughtful conversation.
The Not Black Collection is intentionally calm, clear and dignified. We design pieces that start conversations because they carry statements that invite questions. Someone reading “Not Black, I’m Igbo” can ask, Why? What does it mean to be Igbo?
The Not Black collection is for Igbos who want a calm, dignified way to insist on their identity.
